Sergio Storel’s copper sculpture titled Torso is somewhat abstracted, appearing more like the trunk of a tree than a human torso. As the artist has explained, “The human torso has been the basis of much of my sculptural oeuvre. I have dedicated many an hour to it. It has become a central theme, like a myth, a tree trunk in human destiny. I made torsos of which the surface of the back, forged, hammered, and welded, is a representation of the human expression. The welds constitute the writing of the sculptural assemblage.”
This work of art is part of the collection of Neiman Marcus, one of the first retailers in the world to establish a corporate art collection. What Stanley Marcus began as a personal collecting endeavor became a critical part of the Neiman Marcus Company and is currently directed by an on-staff art curator. The Neiman Marcus Collection specializes in regional and world-renowned artists.
