COURTESY OF THE NEIMAN MARCUS COLLECTION
Costas Coulentianos studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts in Greece and settled in Paris in 1945, where he quickly met and fell under the influence of French sculptor Henri Laurens. NIKH #9270 was completed in 1961, a transitional year for Coulentianos, as he moved away from the influence of Laurens’ more figurative sculpture and focused on more abstract compositions. The present work creates a sense of movement and dynamism, with abstract forms twisting and turning around the sculpture which increases in volume toward the top.
This work of art is part of the collection of Neiman Marcus, one of the first retailers in the world to establish a corporate art collection. What Stanley Marcus began as a personal collecting endeavor became a critical part of the Neiman Marcus Company and is currently directed by an on-staff art curator. The Neiman Marcus Collection specializes in regional and world-renowned artists.
